New Zealand Breakers forward Akil Mitchell was going up for a contested rebound when a freak injury caused his eyeball to come out of its socket.

After Taipans center Nnanna Egwu poked Mitchell in the eye, Mitchell fell to the ground in pain, and his eye came out of its socket. The broadcast didn’t show  replay of the graphic injury, but viewers did quickly glimpse it. The game stopped for fifteen minutes as Mitchell was rushed to the hospital.

But surprisingly, Mitchell is expected to recovery nicely.

“Akil is sitting up and resting, and has vision to his injured eye,” Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher told the New Zealand Herald. “While there is some damage, the early reports are very positive that the injury is not as serious as first feared.”

Mitchell even took to Twitter to joke about the incident, posting a pair of eyeball emojis before asking, “… too soon? Lol thanks for all the love, well wishes, and prayers tonight. I’m home and seeing fine, more tests tomorrow”
