Former basketball coach claims PA school didn’t want black team
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A western Pennsylvania prep school disputes a lawsuit by former basketball coach who claims he was forced to quit after being told he was recruiting too many blacks.
Anthony Cheatham, who’s half black, sued The Kiski School Monday in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh.
Headmaster Christopher Brueningsen says race wasn’t an issue, rather, following Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association regulations was.
Cheatham says officials became “uneasy” when the races of many of his recruits became public.
Brueningsen says Cheatham unexpectedly quit after being told he had to follow PIAA regulations. He says the PIAA was concerned that Kiski was recruiting from member schools.
The school is in Saltsburg, about 35 miles east of Pittsburgh.
