High school football practices rethought to avoid heat related deaths

Athletic trainers are calling on high school football coaches do eliminate traditional two-a-day practices in order to prevent heat related deaths and injuries.

A report issued by the National Association of Athletic Trainers on Thursday outlined the dangers of the grueling training sessions and noted 39 heat related football deaths since 1995.

All of those have occurred in the month of August.

Last year a Kentucky high school coach was charged with reckless homicide after one of his players collapsed and died during one such workout.

The new guidelines suggested by the N.A.A.T. would bring high-school workouts in line with current college practices.
