What’s bad for the heart can also be bad for the mind. A new study found that people who have high cholesterol in their 40s and 50s have a 66 percent higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia later in life.

Even borderline high cholesterol was found to raise that risk. The study did not examine the reason why cholesterol might contribute to dementia.

Researchers say an estimated 100 million Americans have either high or borderline cholesterol levels.
