South Carolina State University is currently being investigated for alleged misuse of state and federal grant funds towards its transportation research center. The James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center (JECUTC) is named after alumni and House Majority Whip Rep. James E. Clyburn, who has recently become a vocal critic of the center’s management.

Back in 1998, when the center first opened, proponents of the JECUTC promised it would recast the future of transportation, with state of the art research programs, and plans to open a multi-million dollar physical complex.

However last month, amidst claims that the university had been mismanaging their grant funds, state Sen. Robert Ford called for an independent state audit of the center, which has reportedly received millions of dollars over the course of 12 years.
