Foxy Brown becomes latest rapper to launch foray into politics

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Foxy Brown’s career in music has been much eclipsed by her tantrums and inappropriate behavior, essentially to the point of anyone under the age of 25 likely having to Google what her exact relevance is. Since the beginning of her emergence onto the music scene at the age of 17, Foxy has always been cast as the role of the follower. Starting with the obvious, her stage name is an ode to Pam Grier role as the protagonist in the famous blaxploitation film Foxy Brown. As great as her delivery was on Jay-Z’s “Ain’t No Nigga,” she was accused of spitting lyrics written by her much older collaborator.

Her role of the follower continued to be solidified after she threw a fit —and her spit — onto hotel employees who could not furnish her with an iron. Her rap sheet continued to grow à la Naomi Campbell, including having to complete community service for recently assaulting a neighbor with a cell phone.

Last week, as though her past indiscretion of using obscene language at a concert in Trinidad never occurred, Foxy announced via Trinidad Express “Who else but me?” could serve as Trinidad’s cultural youth ambassador. Not to bring up old news, but a certain ex-Fugee member who was excluded from running for Haiti’s presidency served as Haiti’s cultural ambassador as well.

According to Foxy, she’s “forged many political alliances and [is] well-versed, articulate and educated. Beyond just having a vast amount of music industry experience, I am a staunch believer in being the voice for our young Trinidadian people.” Eloquently stated, Foxy.

While I certainly hope the best for Foxy and her upcoming album Black Roses due to be released December 24th, I certainly think that Trinidad has several other native artists to the island nation without rap sheets and behavioral issues that may better serve in the best capacity in representing Trinidad. Nice try, Foxy, but maybe when you stop throwing tantrums, we talk about you representing someone other than yourself, especially the youth.
