From Atlanta Journal Constitution:

The Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS), one of the nation’s top accrediting agencies, announced today Atlanta Public Schools is being placed on probation — effective immediately.

According to Mark Elgart, president and CEO of AdvancED, the school district will have until Sept. 30 to make progress on a series of recommendations from the agency. If the findings are not addressed by the next SACS review, the district could lose its accreditation.

“Leadership is critical in the success any school system, and what were trying to do in regards to leadership matters is trying to prevent them from negatively impacting what happens in the classroom,” he said.

Accreditation of a school is vital to students eligibility for scholarship money, college acceptance and federal funding for the school, including Georgia’s HOPE scholarship.
