Black, male, and Muslim in America
GAME CHANGERS VIDEO - Some say Muslims are the new "black people" in America ...
What does it mean to be a black male in America? Misunderstood, stereotyped, alienated are just a few words that come to mind.
Some say Muslims are the new “black people” in America. Since 9-11, this group has been experienced even more scrutiny and been victims of stereotyping and alienation too. Brandan Odums, New Orleans-based “2025 Game Changer Fellow” decided to ask the question: “What does it mean to be a black male Muslim in America?”
He met and interviewed K.Gates, a rapper and entrepreneur living in New Orleans. Gates converted to Islam a few years ago and has made the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, which is highlighted in this video. He also achieved wide-spread fame when he produced the Super Bowl theme song for the New Orleans Saints during their 2009 victory year.
This two-part video offers a compelling picture of the variety and complexity of what it means to be black, male, and Muslim in America.
