The city of Detroit is taking extreme measures to get out of financial melee and closing half its schools.
The Associated Press reports that State education officials ordered the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools to immediately implement the plan to balance the city’s books.
The Detroit News says the new financial restructuring will increase class sizes to as many as 60 students.
According to the AP, State superintendent of public instruction Mike Flanagan released a letter Feb. 8 saying that the state plans to install another financial manager who must continue to implement Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb’s plan even after he leaves June 30.
Bobb’s plan promises to wipe out the district’s $327 million deficit by 2014.
