Two Detroit children were killed in a house fire earlier today that contributed to the collapse of the house. The girls’ bodies, 8-year-old Alaya and 10-year-old Lataya Cook, were later found under the rubble.

The school administrators of Spain School held an assembly to discuss the death of their fellow classmates and offered additional help for students who may need it.
The grandmother of the girls, Marguerite Cook, said Alaya had a school play coming up and described her excitement for the event. “Alaya was so happy about it,” she said. “She was talking to me all the time about the outfit. She said she couldn’t wait for me to see her in it. Now that’s not going to happen.”
