Katie’s Kids Learning Center is closing down all of its South Florida day care centers less than a year after a 2-year-old died after being left in a hot van.

Citing economic struggles, owners Kathryn Muhammed and Barbara Dilthey said it had become too difficult to sustain their other schools in Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Margate, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Katie’s Kids Learning Center in Delray Beach came under fire in August, when 2-year old Haile Brockington died after she was left in a hot van for hours. An attorney for the co-owners said the backlash from the death essentially crippled the company.

“The actions of a couple people last summer has resulted in a financial hardship to (Muhammed’s) organization,” attorney Betty Resch said. “It’s sad that the children are going to lose this service.”
