Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh has an explanation for why some members of a crowd of NASCAR fans booed first lady Michelle Obama at the Homestead-Miami Speedway when she was introduced along with Jill Biden and a group of military veterans (and their kids) over the weekend: “uppityism.”

Limbaugh, who has never shied away from racially loaded commentary, coined the new word — a version of the time-worn racial insult that cast black Americans who “didn’t know their place” as “uppity” in eras past — on his radio show Monday. Said Limbaugh:

“We don’t like paying millions of dollars for Mrs. Obama’s vacations. The NASCAR crowd doesn’t quite understand why when the husband and the wife are going to the same place, the first lady has to take her own Boeing 757 with family and kids and hangers-on four hours earlier than her husband, who will be on his 747. NASCAR people understand that’s a little bit of a waste. They understand it’s a little bit of uppity-ism.”

This isn’t the first time Limbaugh has used the term “uppity” to describe the Obamas. In February, he called President Obama “uppity” and an elitist.
