TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office says a former University of Tulsa football player who died after an unsanctioned boxing match suffered from sudden exertion due to sickle cell trait complications.
The office revealed the new details about George Clinckscale’s death Tuesday. A full autopsy report isn’t expected for several weeks.
Clinkscale died Sept. 22 after boxing in Guts Church’s Fight Night VI. Witnesses said he had cramping and severe pain after the bout.
His family is pursuing a lawsuit against the church and owners. Attorney Trevor Henson says had Guts Church officials followed Oklahoma laws, they would have had a pre-fight physical performed and a doctor at ringside.
The church’s attorney, Derrick Teague, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.
