Sophia Nelson, featured columnist at theGrio, spoke with MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts about the ways in which different generations of black women view Michelle Obama. She explains that older generations have a more maternal feeling towards her, saying “My mom, who is a baby boomer, looks at Michelle like a daughter figure, someone she’s proud of.”

On the other hand, Nelson says that women who are her age and younger — Generation X and Y — look at her as a rock star. “She is the epitome of what black women want to be: she is affirmed, fabulous, fulfilled… she let’s us know that we can have it all.”
