Mitt Romney, still struggling to connect with southern Republicans and voters who make less than $100,000 a year, headed to Mississippi on Friday and tried his hand at southern charm.

Calling himself an “unofficial southerner,” the former Massachusetts governor, who also claims Utah and Michigan as his home states, took a shot at southern lingo.

In Jackson, Romney greeted a town hall audience with “hey y’all!” and announced that he’d started his morning with “a biscuit and some cheesy grits.”

And at a speech in Pascagoula, Romney said that being down south was having quite an effect on him:

“I’m learning to say y’all and I like grits, and strange things are happening to me!” he told the crowd at a rally.

Strange things, indeed.
