Independence Day is an American holiday dating back to July 4, 1776 honoring the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed, declaring America free from Great Britain’s rule. Despite its historical significance, today is a day mostly known for fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, baseball and quality family time.

TheGrio took to the streets to ask people in New York City what their plans for today are, and what exactly makes them feel patriotic. We got responses from people from all over the city, country and the world at large. Traditions varied and what patriotism meant to each individual was undeniably unique.
