Members of the state and local NAACP chapters, Black Clergy Consortium, and Interfaith Coalition Building Blocks of Wilmington are holding a rally today near New Castle to address the fatal shooting last week of James L. Green by a local police officer.

Initial police reports stated that after being pulled over on Memorial Drive near New Castle on Thursday, James L. Green reached for a gun while turning his car around and driving directly toward police officers.

Officers fired into Green’s car, fatally striking him.  However, witnesses have come forward disputing details in this report, so a federal investigation is being called for by the NAACP and Black Clergy.

This incident marks the fifth police-involved shooting in Delaware in the past four months, and the third to be fatal.  This is also another controversial police-involved shooting following the Chavis Carter case in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

In the Carter case, police reports stated that while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car, Carter took out a concealed weapon and shot himself in the head, committing suicide.
