Fan apologizes for tweeting joke about NFL player Torrey Smith's slain brother

BALTIMORE – A Twitter user has issued a formal apology after tweeting an insensitive joke about Baltimore Ravens’ receiver Torrey Smith’s dead brother. The Tweet came following the Ravens’ emotional win over the New England Patriots Sunday night.

Late Saturday night, Smith’s brother Tevin Jones was killed in a car accident. Smith opted to still suit up for the Ravens in Sunday night’s game, and scored two touchdowns, lifting his team to victory. The Baltimore Sun has more on the Twitter user’s apology:

The apology comes days after Moody used her Twitter account to send this message: “Hey, Smith, how about you call your bro and tell him all about your wi— ohhhh. Wait. #TooSoon?”

The comment came less than 24 hours after Smith’s younger brother, Tevin Jones, was killed in a motorcycle accident. It immediately elicited angry reaction from Ravens fans and others online. But many went further, calling her vulgar expletives and wishing harm upon her. Several commenters posted contact information for Moody’s superior at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where she works as a senior administrative coordinator.

Since the initial post, Moody has switched her Twitter account to private and declined, through her employer, to comment for this article.
