6-year-old killed in hit and run

The family of a 6-year-old boy who was killed in a hit and run crash in Miramar pleaded for the driver to turn himself in Thursday, just hours after the child died.

“Why could someone so wicked hit a baby and run? Could they just turn themselves in?” said a tearful Shirley Adams, the grandmother of D’Andre Binns. “He’s just a 6-year-old, it’s not fair to the child.”

Adams, who returned to the scene of the incident Thursday morning, said the boy was crossing the road with his stepfather, who was holding a baby girl.

Police say Binns was crossing Miramar Parkway in the 6200 block around 8:30 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle, possibly a white Dodge Charger, and thrown onto the car’s hood. The boy fell off the car and was run over, and was taken to Joe DiMaggio Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver kept going eastbound on Miramar Parkway, turned south on State Road 7 and disappeared, police said.

“This is very hard, I lost my son in 2000 in a car accident and then my grandson, oh lord,” said Adams, who was inconsolable, shaking and sobbing uncontrollably.
