Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

For even the most loyal fan of Beyoncé, one layer of her identity has remained a mystery: how did the “Crazy In Love” singer get her unique first name?

During the premiere of Beyoncé’s upcoming HBO documentary Beyoncé: Life is But a Dream, her maternal uncle Roland Beyince revealed the inspiration behind her name.

According to the New York Post, Ronald, who is Tina Knowles’ biological brother, told the Hampton Sheet that Beyoncé’s first name was inspired by his side of the family.

“My sister Tina didn’t think we had enough boys in the family to keep the [Beyince] name going, so she gave Beyoncé our last name as the first name,” he said.

Tina wound up giving her daughter Beyoncé a similar name to Beyince, but Ronald didn’t reveal why she swapped out vowels.
