Recently, “trap rapper” Gucci Mane used social media to announce he was changing his stage name from to “Guwop”.

Whether or not he was serious is still to be determined, but it did shed light on the phenomenon of recording artists using a name change or alias to promote a new album, lifestyle, or to distance themselves from a checkered past.
