‘Django Unchained,’ Jamie Foxx honored at MTV Movie Awards

theGRIO REPORT - The 2013 MTV Movie Awards unleashed another round of no holes barred sketch comedy, honoring films Django Unchained, The Avengers, and more...

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Along with entertainment, the show highlighted upcoming summer blockbusters, offering a sneak preview from the upcoming film Iron Man 3, and the world premiere trailer of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Additional presenters included Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto from the forthcoming Star Trek sequel, and Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez from Fast & Furious 6.

Red carpet soundbites

Prior to the ceremony, the red carpet was in full force leading into the showroom. Drag queen RuPaul came dressed in purple paisley, and expressed support for Beasts of the Southern Wild, his favorite film of the year.

“I love a spiritual moment,” the entertainer said on the red carpet. “I love anything that looks behind the curtain of what we’re doing on this planet…It’s all about the tenacity of the human spirit.”

RuPaul also chimed in on the ongoing fight for marriage equality, commenting, “It’s not even debatable. Give everybody a chance to live their life. People love fear. Humans love fear. I can never gauge how much fear they’re going to want. I’ve lived a long time to see the pendulum swings back and forth.”

Charlamagne tha God, star of MTV2’s Guy Code, discussed the significance of his southern roots in his job.

“You have to have that country sensibility to stay grounded in this business because you could come out here and lose your head,” he remarked. “It keeps me in the humble space where I need to be.”

The TV and radio personality was on hand to promote his TV series, but further spoke to the recent uproar over Rick Ross’ date rape lyrics and Reebok’s decision to discontinue their endorsement of the MMG rapper.

“These rappers have never been conscious of what they say,” Charlamagne remarked. “The problem I have with that is where is the line in hip hop? Why did we all the sudden start pointing at Rick Ross and say that was wrong. These guys rap about killing each other, they celebrate drug culture, now all the sudden [sic], something’s wrong? No, it’s been wrong. So why did we just all the sudden[ly] target him. If we’re going to talk to him, let’s talk to all of them.”
