S. Epatha Merkerson praises Jesse L. Martin's performance in Marvin Gaye biopic

Golden Globe winner S. Epatha Merkerson and David Alan Grier, star alongside Kerry Washington, Craig Robinson and Diahann Carroll, in the upcoming romantic comedy Peeples.

The film, written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism, centers around the Peeples, a well-off family celebrating a reunion weekend in the Hamptons, which is interrupted by a surprise guest.

During an interview with theGrio’s Chris Witherspoon, Merkerson talked about her role in Peeples, and opened up about playing Marvin Gaye’s mother in the upcoming biopic Sexual Healing.

Merkerson reunited with her former Law & Order co-star Jesse L. Martin, who replaced Lenny Kravitz in the movie.

The Lincoln actress, who recently wrapped up filming her role in Sexual Healing, praised Martin’s portrayal of Gaye.

Merkerson says that she hopes audiences that see Sexual Healing, realize that Gaye was an amazingly creative artistic who was “trying to pull his life together.”

“Sometimes struggles go too far and there a point of no return,” she said. “[Marvin Gaye] was an amazingly creative human being and he was born into a set of circumstances that led to his death.”

Peeples hits theaters nationwide May 10th.
