The Met Institute Costume Gala held last night in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of art is always a party with a purpose. This year’s theme of punk rock and its influence on fashion was a reflection of the current exhibit on view at the storied institution, “Punk: Chaos to Couture.”
This show will run from May 9 through August 14. Yet, celebrities who came out to the fundraiser (which helps finance this fashion-focused arm of the Met) only had one night to make some daring fashion moves in affinity with the exhibit.
In alignment with the spirit of the night, Beyoncé, the event’s honorary co-chair, took punk and glam to a heightened level through some bold fashion risks. Wearing Givenchy, her deconstructed, low neckline drew focus to her underdone makeup, bed head hairdo, and glowing skin.
The bottom of her ensemble — composed of graphic gloves that blended into a matching pattern adorning her boots and skirt — were eye catching, dramatic and a little raw. In other words, everything “glam” and “punk” could hope to be.
Other stars also opted to overtly express the punk theme, although in more subtle ways.
Jennifer Lopez, wearing Michael Kors, complemented her tight, abstracted animal print gown with a gravity-defying pompadour.
Nicole Richie went all out in the hair department, pairing a sparkling white, long-sleeved gown from Topshop with shocking white hair. Definitely different!
Few celebrities took the punk leap though, most choosing to simply look pretty for the paparazzi instead of punk for the hell of it. Luminaries such as La La Anthony (who wore Zac Posen), Kerry Washington (in Vera Wang), and Alicia Keys (rocking Jason Wu) all played it safe in lovely couture gowns.
While many blogs praised Beyoncé for having the best look of the night, people on social media were not as approving.
“I’m sorry but…. Beyonce looks dumb…..,” wrote one user on a popular fashion blog. “I can’t cosign on the superhero realness she trying to serve.”
“I wanted to like Bey’s [out]fit. #MetGala,” tweeted another.
Ah well. When taking fashion risks, you always score style points — but you can’t win with everybody.
