Graduation day serves one of the proudest moments for parents of high schoolers, but for Ronald Davis and Lucia McBath it was a reminder that their son Jordan Davis was tragically killed before he reached adulthood.
Jordan Davis was an unarmed African-American teenager that was shot and killed at a gas station in November by a white man, Michael Dunn, who allegedly confronted the teen and his friends for playing loud music.
In the wake of the controversial Travyon Martin shooting, which also occurred in Florida, and the national coverage that followed, Davis’ death lead many to draw a parallel between the two teens.
Many in the region saw the teens deaths as a rallying cry to get the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law repealed.
Davis, 17, would have graduated Wednesday, as a senior along with all of his classmates at Samuel W. Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Florida.
According to Jet magazine, school administrators presented an honorary high school diploma to the parents of the slain teen, along with two other families of students who died that year. The commencement ceremony, as well as the distribution of the honorary degrees to the late students, will be held at the University of North Florida.
Dunn was indicted on a first degree murder charge in this case. He plead not guilty to the murder charges and is scheduled to stand trial in September.
