Memphis will always have a special place in Anfernee ‘Penny’ Hardaway’s heart.

It’s the hometown of the former NBA All-Star and also where he played college ball. WMC-TV’s Kontji Anthony reports the now-retired Hardaway is giving  Memphis’ under-insured a much needed assist.

Hardaway, 41, purchased one million health care discount cards, according to the report. The initiative was announced at Light of Glory International Church in Memphis Sunday. Hardaway previously donated $1 million to the Memphis Tigers athletic program. He’s previously returned to his old middle school to coach basketball.

“Medical is huge,” Hardaway said of the new ‘Penny’ cards. “After having six knee surgeries, I know what it would have taken for me if I didn’t have insurance or if I didn’t have the NBA to help pay for my surgeries, it would have been thousands of dollars.”

Hardaway was a four-time NBA All-Star and an All-NBA First Team selection in 1995 and 96. He’s most remembered for his time teaming with Shaquille O’Neal on the Orlando Magic. His ‘Lil Penny’ Nike ads were incredibly popular and catchy.

The WMC-TV report indicates the discount cards can be used anywhere in the nation and can be accessed at www.pennygivesback.com.
