Nia Long defends interracial romance in ‘Best Man’ sequel

theGRIO REPORT - During an interview with theGrio, Nia Long talks about her character's interracial love interest in 'The Best Man Holiday'..

After a 14-year hiatus, the cast of The Best Man has reunited for The Best Man Holiday.

The film which hits theaters in November, and stars Nia Long, Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Melissa De Sousa and Regina Hall, picks up when the group of friends reunite over the Christmas holidays.

Long reprises her role as Jordan Armstong, Harper Stewart’s [played by Diggs] best friend from college and former love interest. In a new trailer for The Best Man Holiday, Long’s character kisses Eddie Cibrian who stars as her on-screen love interest.

During an interview with theGrio at the 2013 American Black Film Festival, Long weighed in on her character’s interracial love interest.

“You love who you love, and you should be with who you love,” Long said when asked about her stance on interracial dating. “That’s the end of the story for me.”

She also talked about what it was like to play an MSNBC producer in the film.

“It’s very stressful, because you gotta be quick, straight to the point, and sometimes people are not going to like what you have to say.”

Chestnut, who reprises his role as Lance Sullivan in Best Man Holiday, says he doesn’t feel pressure from fans of the original Best Man to “get it right” with the sequel.

“Once we made the first film, I don’t think that people were thinking about a sequel,” said Chestnut. “It’s been fourteen years, and if we mess it up, they can go back to the original…. Obviously we still have the first one to stand on even if this one doesn’t work, so I didn’t feel pressure at all.”
