A young mother lost the ashes of her recently deceased baby when the purse she was carrying them in was stolen from her on Friday night in Alabama, police said Monday.

Monica Thomas, 19, was walking with a friend in Montgomery, Ala., when the thief stole her bag containing the small urn with her baby’s cremated remains, said Martha Earnhardt, a spokeswoman for the Montgomery Police Department.

Earnhardt said Thomas’ baby, named Jamar Simmons Jr., was born in the spring and died only a couple hours after birth.

Thomas told police she was carrying the ashes with her because she planned to bring them to her mother’s grave on Saturday to bury them, said Earnhardt. “I wanted him there with my mom,” Thomas told NBC affiliate WSFA.

She even begged the thief: “Put them on the porch or even just call and tell me where it is, and I’ll be grateful. I just want my baby back.”
