No new trial yet for Detroit cop in girl’s death
DETROIT (AP) — It could be months before another trial is held in the case of a Detroit police officer who admits he accidentally killed a 7-year-old girl.
Wayne County Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway says she wants to have a second trial before the end of the year. She told attorneys Thursday she’ll discuss a date on Aug. 21.
Joseph Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones. His first trial in June ended without a verdict. His gun went off after he stormed a Detroit home to catch a murder suspect in 2010.
Separately, a videographer filming the raid for “The First 48” TV show was placed on probation Thursday and ordered to perform community service. Allison Howard pleaded no contest to obstructing justice during the investigation.
