NBC Chicago – A 6-year-old boy riding in a car with his mom was among 21 shot, two fatally, since Friday afternoon in Chicago.

The boy’s condition remains unknown, but police said his injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

The boy was shot while sitting inside a red Chevy Sedan with his mom around 11:30 p.m. in the 4200 block of West Wilcox when two cars drove by, appearing to be shooting at each other, police said.

The boy was shot in the shoulder and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital. He was reportedly undergoing surgery Saturday. No others were reported injured in the shooting, police said.

Police are still searching for suspects in the incident, but no one was in custody as of Saturday morning. Authorities said they could not get a good description of the vehicles because there were few witnesses in the event.

Community activist Andrew Holmes canvassed the area Saturday, asking people to step up and help solve the crime.

“When they gave the Trayvon Martin verdict down in Florida, Chicago stepped up and protested, came out in the streets, voiced their opinions,” Holmes said. “What about the little kids getting shot in the city of Chicago? Where you at then?”
