A three-time winner of the SESAC songwriter of the year award, The 30-year-old has penned classics for some the biggest names in music, and his ability to portray raw emotion in his lyrics is widely respected in the music industry.
The New Orleans native released his debut EP, Discrete Luxury earlier this week and stopped by theGrio, to talk about the challenges of finding his own voice, the signs of a good hit record and why African-Americans need to take back control of hip-hop culture.
