NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Bloomberg says he won’t endorse anyone in the race to succeed him as New York City mayor.

Bloomberg says he doesn’t want to do anything that “complicates it for the next mayor.” He says his job is to continue to govern and “then help the next guy.”

The mayor made his comments Friday on WOR Radio.

He says one of the most important things he can do after the November election is to get the next mayor up to speed “so he can hit the ground running.”

Bloomberg says he’ll leave “the campaigning to the campaigners.”

The Republican nominee is Joe Lhota. Democrat Bill de Blasio finished Tuesday’s primary with just above 40 percent of the vote. That’s the threshold that would have clinched his party’s nomination. Election officials are still checking the vote totals and adding absentee ballots.
