New Orleans bounce performer Big Freedia is planning to set a Guiness World Record for the number of people twerking next week in New York City.
Big Freedia, a.k.a. the Queen of Bounce, will host the “Record Breaking Booty Shaking: Break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® Twerk Record with Big Freedia,” sponsored by Fuse on September 25 at 12PM in NYC’s Herald Square, reports Billboard.
The dance move, which has long been a part of the hip-hop culture, hit the mainstream MTV audience at this year’s Video Music Awards with Miley Cyrus’ racy performance.
Following Cyrus’ VMA performance, Big Freedia responded on Fuse, saying: “She was going too far. She’s trying to twerk, but don’t know how to twerk. It’s become offensive to a lot of people who’ve been twerking and shaking their asses for years, especially in the black culture.”
Fuse announced earlier this summer that Big Freedia would be getting her own reality show, Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce. The show is set to air October 2 at 11PM EST.
DJ and music producer Diplo was going to attempt a similar record at Electric Zoo, according the Huffington Post. Diplo’s set was cancelled, however, along with the rest of the scheduled acts on the last day of the festival, following two drug-related deaths.
