NFL star Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son has died, due to an alleged assault by the boyfriend of the child’s mother.
The Minnesota Vikings running back missed practice Thursday due to a “tragic” personal situation involving the assault of his young son in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, reported NBC’s Pro Football Talk.
Nelson Peterson, Adrian’s father, confirmed to the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the child is Adrian Peterson’s son, but it is not Adrian Peterson Jr.
“All I can say is, we are asking for prayers and for respect for our family as we deal with this tragic situation,” Nelson Peterson said to the Pioneer Press.
The 2-year-old boy suffered severe head injuries, according to local law enforcement.
The boyfriend of the child’s mother, Joseph Patterson, has been arrested and charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.
The Argus Leader reports that Patterson was home with the toddler while the boy’s mother was out. Patterson called 911 Wednesday night, reporting that the child had been chocking. Following a medical examination, doctors noticed injuries were consistent with abuse.
Peterson returned to practice on Friday, reports the Argus Leader, and confirmed to reporters afterward that he would be playing Sunday, “without a doubt.”
The young child was in critical condition and has reportedly passed away, according to KARE 11 and NFL.com.
