Hip-hop artist Big Freedia joined Melissa Harris-Perry on her show Sunday to talk about the dance culture in Louisiana and all things bounce.
Big Freedia, also known as the “Queen of Bounce,” is at the forefront of a genre of music that was born out of New Orleans and has spread to become a much bigger movement.
Bounce, as described by Big Freedia, is “an up-tempo, heavy based call-and-response-type music.”
According to the rapper, it has been around for two decades and has become a staple part of the New Orleans’ culture.
Now, Big Freedia has been offered a reality show on the Fuse network — appropriately titled Queen of Bounce — which he hopes will expose the realities of bounce music and lifestyle of those behind it.
The rapper said he believes the show will “open doors for bounce music to become mainstream,” and to “get people involved with Big Freedia and in my world and in my movement of bounce music and the culture of New Orleans.”
