BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns backup quarterback Jason Campbell will replace struggling Brandon Weeden and start on Sunday in Kansas City.
Coach Rob Chudzinski announced the decision to sit Weeden on Tuesday. Chudzinski said the choice to go with Campbell was based on “consistency and production.” Chudzinksi said the bottom line is that Campbell, who has made 71 career starts in the NFL, gives the Browns the best chance against the unbeaten Chiefs.
Weeden had played poorly in losses to Detroit and Green Bay. He completed just 17 of 42 passes against the Packers.
Cleveland fans have been clamoring for a change, but Chudzinksi said Weeden’s lack of support was not a factor in making the switch.
Campbell will be the third QB to start for the Browns (3-4) this season. Brian Hoyer made two starts before a season-ending injury on Oct. 3.
