LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawyer for former cardiologist Conrad Murray says he’s “elated” to be out of jail.

Murray, who was convicted of causing Michael Jackson’s death by providing him with an overdose of a powerful anesthetic, was released today in downtown Los Angeles after serving nearly two years of a four-year sentence.

His lawyer says Murray plans to spend time with his girlfriend and children and readjust to life outside jail.

Murray was convicted in 2011 in connection with Jackson’s death two years earlier. The pop star had been preparing for a series of comeback concerts, and Murray was serving as his personal physician.

Murray’s prospects for continuing his career are uncertain. His license to practice medicine has been suspended or revoked in three states, and his face and name have become well known.

His lawyer says Murray did a lot of writing while behind bars, but she doesn’t know if he has plans for a book or any other projects that would allow him to earn a living.

Earlier this month, jurors in a lawsuit filed by Jackson’s mother against a concert promoter determined that Murray was not unfit or incompetent to serve as Jackson’s tour doctor. But the panel said it did not condone the doctor’s conduct.
