Spike Lee on new film 'Oldboy': 'It's not gonna open No. 1 at the box office'

The newest Spike Lee Joint, Oldboy, hits theaters November 27, and the the Oscar-nominated director is candid about where he thinks the movie will debut at the box office.
“This film is not gonna open No. 1 at the box office. It’ s not that type of film. And I don’t think anybody has those type of expectations on it,” Lee told theGrio’s Chris Witherspoon.
Lee’s Oldboy is a remake of Park Chan-wook’s 2003 South Korean cult film that centers on a man (played by Josh Brolin), obsessed with vengeance, who sets out to discover why he was kidnapped and locked up into solitary confinement for 20 years without reason.
Oldboy is definitely a departure from a typical ‘Spike Lee Joint,’ which is examine race-relations, colorism in the black community, and political issues. However Lee is certain is loyal audience will show up to see his new film.
“They’re smart,” the 56-year-old director said. “They’ve been with me since 1986. They’re not getting off the mule now. They are gonna ride with me until… ride or die, ride or die.”
Sunday, the Malcolm X director appeared on Oprah’s Next Chapter and had a conversation about how far he’s come in his career since his film, Do the Right Thing (which celebrates it’s 25th anniversary next year), was in theaters.
Lee opened up about the possibility of one day directing Oprah Winfrey on the big screen during his interview theGrio.
“It hasn’t happened yet, but there’s a possibility. If the role was right and if [Oprah] felt the role was right I think that she would do it and I would cast her.”
