To Faith Wambua and her two young children, it was to be a happy day at Nairobi’s upscale Westgate shopping mall.

The plan was to buy an anniversary gift for her husband, order some flowers and browse for some items that would bring joy to her 9 year old daughter and 21 month old son. But on that fateful day, Saturday September 21st, she found herself in a life and death struggle, making decisions moment to moment to prevent a deadly group of terrorist from shooting her and her family dead.

Dateline NBC traveled back to Nairobi for an interview with Wambua. She recalls to  producer Mario Garcia the constant dilemmas she faced as she and her children lay motionless for over four hours until she was confident that the persons coming to their rescue were not the killers as she had witnessed during the ordeal.

Though motionless, her mind was awash with thoughts of terror and survival. She us tells her story in her own words.
