Director Lee Daniels joined The Arsenio Hall Show Monday to discuss the relationship he had with his father while growing up gay and his recent film, The Butler.

Daniels told Hall “there was never a closet,” and that his earliest memory growing up was when he was six and walked down the stairs in his mother’s high heels while his father was playing cards with friends.

“I’ve always been embraced,” said Daniels on the topic of his sexuality. “I’ve not been embarrassed about it, and it’s been a great place for me.”

Daniels was not embarrassed of his lifestyle, however he shared that he thought his father was.

“He was embarrassed, I think,” the director said of his father. Daniels said he never really understood why his father gave him a hard time until he made The Butler, and then he understood and was able to forgive his father.
