Among the memes that emerged from last night’s eclectic Grammy awards was: What’s the deal with Pharrell’s hat?

The super-producer who won several Grammys alongside the French electronic music duo Daft Punk was sporting an oversized brown hat, which some compared unfavorably to the Arby’s logo.

Most viewers probably dismissed Pharrell’s attire as pure eccentricity, but backstage he confirmed that it was an homage to Malcolm McLaren and the World’s Famous Supreme Team’s old school hip-hop music video for their 1982 song “Buffalo Girls.”

“It’s a Vivienne Westwood Buffalo hat from when she was with Malcolm McLaren … It’s not vintage — I would’ve been really stylin’ if I had one from the ’80s,” Pharrell told The Hollywood Reporter backstage.
