While football player Michael Sam has received widespread support for his decision to come out of the closet as a gay man, not everyone is coming to his defense.
Right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh went on a rant today about Sam’s admission, claiming that heterosexuals are “under assault.”
“Why is a gay man playing football heroic? Because the media wants a gay player to succeed,” Limbaugh claimed.
Ironically, Limbaugh came under fire back in 2003 when he made similar remarks criticizing then-Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.
“Sorry to say this, I don’t think he’s been that good from the get-go,” Limbaugh said at the time. “I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team.”
