CHARLOTTE, N.C. –Â An 11-year-old boy has died after witnesses say he jumped into a southwest Charlotte creek to save his 7-year-old sister.
Paramedics pulled the two children from the creek Thursday night.
The call went out around 8 p.m. for a water rescue behind Marie G. Davis Middle School off of Griffith Street.
Paramedics performed CPR on both children and they were transported to the hospital. A spokesperson for Carolinas Medical Center confirmed Friday morning that fifth-grader Randez Brown died. Family members tell NBC Charlotte that Samiyah, the 7-year-old sister, is on life support at CMC.
An ambulance also took their grandmother to the hospital after she collapsed from the shock of what happened.
Family friends say the children’s grandmother was watching the two kids at the time of the incident.
“I heard someone screaming, so I went outside and it was her,” said family friend Mary Walls.
The kids left the neighborhood to play in the culvert, located over a fence and down a hill behind the CMS Military and Global Leadership Academy at Marie G. Davis.
“There were down here playing and she always told them not to come down here and they do anyway,” Walls said.
The first child was found near the creek just after 8 p.m. About eight minutes later a dive team located a second child in the deeper end of the culvert where the water can be 10 feet deep.
