Aretha Franklin to sue over fake report of fight with Patti LaBelle

Aretha Franklin didn’t find anything funny about a fake report claiming she was in a backstage fight with her fellow soul legend Patti LaBelle.

Earlier this month the parody site News Nerd reported that Franklin and LaBelle engaged in fisticuffs at a concert on March 20th and the false story went viral.

According to the Detroit News, Franklin is now suing News Nerd for $10 million.

“The stories were not presented as satire or humor. It was presented as a serious news story intended to depict me in a slanderous and derogatory way — defamation of character,” read a statement for Franklin’s publicist.

Although the News Nerd story in question included a disclaimer which said the piece “purely satirical” and “for entertainment purposes only,” several people re-posted it and believe LaBelle was actually arrested for the imaginary altercation.
