Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp changed his walk-up music Sunday to Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” in response to Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s alleged racist comments.
In an audio tape originally released by TMZ Sports, Sterling allegedly made comments to his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, about her Instagram photos with African-American athletes, including Magic Johnson.
Sterling made it clear that his girlfriend should not be “broadcasting” that she is friends with black people.
In a transcript of the full 15 minute audio tape obtained by Deadspin Sunday, Kemp is mentioned. Both Johnson and Kemp took photos with Stiviano that she later posted on Instagram, and Sterling was not happy about it.
The center fielder is friends with Clippers players Blake Griffin and Chris Paul.
“I feel sorry for my boys on that team that have to play for a guy like that,” Kemp told the LA Times. “Chris and Blake and all those guys. Where we come from, it’s not acceptable.”
Kemp’s subtle response to the controversy he has found himself in displayed class.
