A Detroit, Michigan, high school graduate who spent most of her student career on a motorized scooter walked across the stage to receive her diploma Tuesday night.

Iesha Reath stood tall as she received her diploma from Cass Technical High School.

Reath has battled numerous medical conditions that left her weak and often unable to walk. She was born prematurely, with cerebral palsy and sickle cell anemia, and has undergone numerous bone marrow transplants.

Principal Lisa Phillips surprised Reath moments before the ceremony, telling her she’d march last and receive a special honor.

“I don’t want any student to ever leave Cass Tech feeling like they didn’t matter,” Phillips said. “She mattered, and today is her day.”
