Rapper Soulja Boy is back in the spotlight as of late but not for dance hits like “Crank Dat” or “Speakers Going Hammer.”

The Atlanta rapper is instead getting love for his production talents.

Drake recruited Soulja for  “We Made It,” which is an early contender for track of the year. Drake destroys his verse on the single and Soulja is responsible for track’s overall flow and hook.

“That track was actually an intro,” Soulja Boy told theGrio.com’s Kyle Harvey. “Drake heard it and wanted do something with it, and we made it happen.”

“We Made It” led to several freestyles from other rappers, most notably from Jay-Z and Jay Electronica.

“Even though Drake and Jay were going through their beef, it still showed I had the ability to make hits,” Soulja Boy said.

Soulja Boy’s mini revival can also be attributed to Nicki Minaj’s “Yass Bissh Yass.”  He produced the track, which features him on the song’s hook repeating “Yass.”

‘Yass’ is alternate way of saying ‘yes,’ and Minaj said it was inspired by her love of watching RuPaul’s Drag Race:

I live for the way they speak [on that show]. I think that derives from the way that world speaks. Females, we adopted it and it makes us feel very cocky and sexy and feminine. Saying ‘Yass’ as opposed to ‘Yes’ is just putting on a billion times more attitude to the word ‘yes.’ I’m confirming that you are the (expletive). Like…I see you wearing something and I say ‘Yass Bish Yass!’

Soulja originally wanted Minaj to sing the hook, but Minaj thought he’d make a better fit.

The rapper was up to the task.

“I’m comfortable enough to say ‘Yass,'” Soulja Boy said. “I didn’t even know it was a gay term. I’m around girls all the time, and they just kept saying ‘Yass.’ I’m not homophobic, so it wasn’t a problem for me either way.”
