Kandi Burruss opens up about getting married 5 years after death of ex-fiance

Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss is letting viewers into her personal life on Bravo’s Kandi’s Wedding as she marries her fiance, Todd Tucker.

Against vocal family opposition that played out dramatically in season six of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi and Todd have decided to move forward and tie the knot.

Kandi’s marriage to Todd comes exactly five years after the death of her ex-fiance, AJ Jewell, who suffered tragic head injuries after a 2009 fight in an Atlanta nightclub.

In an interview with theGrio.com’s Chris Witherspoon, Kandi opens up about how she overcame the tragedy of losing her ex-fiance to ultimately find true love.

“It definitely was a hard situation to go through, because you’re going through it in front of the world,” Kandi said.

“I’ve actually lost somebody else that I cared for prior to that happening. It’s kind of weird, because to be my age and to have lost so many people that close… I don’t know too many people who have dealt with that. It makes me numb to certain things that other people would feel.”

Kandi also defended her mother, “Mama Joyce,” who she says has received some harsh criticism from some viewers of Kandi’s Wedding.

“What’s hard for me is when people be goin’ in on my mom. People feel like just because they’re mad at her, I’m gonna chime in with them.”

“They forget the fact that she is my momma and I will beat you’re a** about my momma,” Kandi said.

Kandi revealed that although viewers of Kandi’s Wedding are seeing Momma Joyce and Todd at war with each other, there is a happy ending to the story. Today, Todd and Momma Joyce have made up, and according to Kandi, “Momma Joyce loves her son-in-law.”

Tune in to see Kandi and Todd’s larger-than-life Coming to America-themed wedding ceremony on Kandi’s Wedding, Sunday July 6 at 8/7c on Bravo.
