Public Enemy’s Chuck D has teamed up with legendary soul singer Mavis Staples on a new song that puts today’s rap culture on blast.
The song, released late last week, is called “Give WE the Pride.” It sounds like a battle cry against rap music for demoralizing the black community and putting too much emphasis on material things:
I be seeing old folks applaud nonsense that we cannot afford, flashback now ruining some box with sex and teen pop people’s hip-hop stop.
Chuck recently critiqued Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam festival for the crowd’s liberal, and predominantly white, usage of the N word. The critique led to an online war of words with radio personalities Ebro and Peter Rosenberg.
