Shanesha Taylor, the Arizona mother who left her children in a hot car during a job interview, has lost her supporters — and their money.
Earlier in the year, Shanesha Taylor’s story went viral. The woman had nowhere to leave her children during a job interview and had to leave them in a hot car so she could go in search of income to care for them.
When her story went viral, supporters raised thousands of dollars — up to $114,000 — for Taylor to use to keep her children. This money, in part, was meant to be used for a $40,000 trust fund for her children. Prosecutors required the trust fund to be filled for Taylor to avoid jail.
Now, the deadline for the trust fund has passed, but the money isn’t there — and Taylor’s supporters are deserting her.
According to prosecutors, Taylor has spent over $4,000 each month on non-essentials. Reverend Jarrett Maupin, once a vocal supporter of Taylor, said, “We had someone call my office and alert her attorney to the fact that she spent $6,000 at a music studio in Tempe to finish her baby daddy’s rap album.” He added, “That’s not what people gave her that money for.”
Maupin added that Taylor may have dried up her well of support money. “I feel bamboozled and used a little bit, but I don’t regret it because on its face she was what she was,” Maupin said. “Everyone had sympathy for her, but what she’s become is something quite different.”
The money is gone now, and without it, Taylor may be unable to keep her children or stay out of prison. Her attorney, Benjamin Taylor, says she has thrown away the “deal of a lifetime.”
